Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Parametric Phone Stand

To start off, I did some research into common phone stands/holders on the market using e-commerce websites like Shopee and Lazada and narrowed it down to the design below (Figure 1) :

After booting up Fusion360, I tinkered around with different dimensions and experimented with different shapes of the phone holder and narrowed it down to this sketch (Figure2) :

Figure 2 : Sketch

I extruded the sketch to form the main body of the phone holder, and decided the length to be 140mm, based off the length of my own smartphone ; A Samsung Galaxy S20+ (161.9mm).

After forming the body, I curved a few edges of the phone holder to allow the smartphone to fit nicely onto the phone holder.

After some consideration, the tip of the phone holder seemed to be too sharp and may not be ideal for the user if they were to hold it from the top. Hence I removed the top edges and did some remodeling to curve it.

Final Product

Before I go on to show my final product, here are some videos that helped me along with my design process :

We started off this week with another Fusion360 Activity, which helped me to learn more skills to help me with my goal of improving my CAD designing skills. However, Although I managed to create a phone holder sketch, I felt that I did not have sufficient knowledge in the numerous Fusion360 tools to be able to implement more features in my phone holder, which resulted in a mundane and basic although functional phone holder. As I progress through the module I hope to upgrade and improve my skills to create better sketches and designs.
